Choosing Between a Petrol or Electric Lawn Mower

Posted on

When you're lucky enough to have a garden to enjoy during the warm summer months, you'll understand how important it is to keep your lawn trimmed back. Long grass takes longer to cut, can negatively affect the aesthetic of your garden and is more prone to developing moss. Mowing the lawn seems to be a job that people either love or hate, but your choice of a lawnmower can impact on how quick and easy it is to keep your grass in good condition. When looking for a new lawnmower you'll be faced with choosing between a petrol and electric mower, and there are several factors to take into consideration when making your choice.

Petrol Lawn Mowers

Petrol lawnmowers tend to be reserved for larger than average lawns, but they could also be a good option for those that want to mow an average-sized lawn without the risk of cutting through any power cords. They have wide cutting blades and are more powerful than electric mowers, so they're ideal for cutting through tougher grass varieties.

There are many features and accessories available depending on the model of petrol mower you're considering. For example, some petrol mowers have rear rollers, which can improve the appearance of your lawn by adding a striped finish. Mulching plugs are also available, and this can be a beneficial feature if you're working on improving the health of your lawn, as fine cuttings are redistributed back onto your lawn and add nutrients to the soil.

Note that there are some drawbacks to petrol mowers. They tend to be heavier than electric mowers, which can make them difficult to use on sloping lawns, and their powerful engine makes them noisier than electric mowers.

Electric Lawn Mowers

Electric lawn mowers come in a variety of blade widths, so if you have a small lawn and not a lot of storage space for a mower, you can opt for a narrow or mini electric mower. Electric mowers are lighter and easier to manoeuvre than petrol mowers, which is helpful when you have an uneven lawn or sloping sections to mow.

They are relatively inexpensive and do not require fuel, and some electric mowers give you the option of changing the height of the blades so you can keep your grass at the height you prefer. Changing the blade height can also be useful when you've let the grass get a little too long, as it can be easier and quicker to cut the grass down in stages rather than trying to take too much height off with one cut.

The main drawback of an electric mower is the cable dragging behind the mower as you cut the grass. This can get in your way; if your garden is large, you may need an extension cable to reach the rear section of lawn.
